A Book You Might Like – Ripper by Becca C Smith

Ripper (The Riser Saga) (Volume 3) is a fast paced read with lots of unexpected revelations and events.

The world of the Riser Saga, which begins with Riser, is followed by Reaper, and is generally awesome, is set several hundred years from now. An incredible invention known as Age Pro prevents aging, meaning that everyone alive is immortal. Add to that a wild voodoo curse that gives the main character, Chelsan, the power to control the dead, and a vile, seemingly self-appointed but universally loved Boss of the World who happens to be Chelsan’s grandfather AND wants her dead… and you are in for a wild ride.

Reaper ended with lots of unanswered questions and a high amount of tension. While Ripper took time to rebuild that tension, starting instead in a lull in the characters’ lives, it delivers high stakes and incredible complexity.

Everything about the plot works great. The voice continues to be strong, making it easy for the reader to become absorbed in the book. The only thing that wasn’t pitch-perfect was Chelsan’s voice. Through the other two books she was a believable eighteen year old facing ridiculous supernatural situations with sass and flair. In this book, I would have liked to see her tone / voice mature the same way that she has.
