Book Reviews

NOTE (updated Dec. 9): I was in a car accident, got a concussion, the concussion didnt’ heal right, and now I have this crazy post concussion thing. I’m unable to do any book reviews at this time and until further notice (best guess is I’ll be healed in 6-9 months time).

I’m really sorry! Good luck with your books!

I love reading books. I review books: mostly independently published, or Indie, books.

Want to impress your friends at dinner parties?! Read Indie Books. Where do you find Indie books? Right here.

I call my book reviews A Book You Might Like. Occassionally, when I read something offensive, I call it A Book You Might Not Like.

I’m just hilarious and witty that way.

KATHRYN’S REVIEW POLICY

First, I apologize if I don’t get back to you. I can’t respond to everyone.

Second, check out Advice for Authors, for great insights from Successful Indie Authors. Notice the capital S on Successful. These are Indie Authors just like you whose books are paying the bills.

What should I send you, Kathryn?

Send a Query. It’s your book blurb. Probably the same as your product description, or similar. I implore you to read the archives over at Query Shark before you send your Query to the wide world. Make sure it is as good as it can be to get the most reviews and the most sales. Many of the review requests I get are for great books, but the awesomeness isn’t presented in a clear way, so I pass on the books. It’s tragic.

Tragic.

I post all reviews to amazon.com and goodreads.com. I’ll also promote my reviews on facebook and twitter. However, if it isn’t a positive review, I will favor brevity on those sites instead of ranting, or avoid reviewing the book at all. I won’t post negative reviews of Indies. Because it’s nice to be nice.

IS MY BOOK RIGHT FOR KATHRYN?

Kathryn Likes:

Fantasy (including the sprawling ones with a whole made up language)
Science Fiction
Sexy-Times (aka romantic elements)
Strong Female Protagonists
Robots
Books About Gardening, Homesteading, and Design
Hilarious Humor
Thrilling Adventures
Vikings

If your book fits into the above categories, or you just think I’m grand and wish to share your beautiful creation with me, send me a brief description of the book. My email is kathrynmhogan at gmail dot com.

If I agree to review your book, I will do so as soon as is humanly possible. If there are links you’d like me to include in the review post, send them on over! (Things like your website or whatnot). Pictures would be nice, too, if you feel that you are particularly pleasing to the eye. I will send you links as soon as it’s done. I’d also love to host a guest post from you, or have a interview, or help promote your work in other ways.

The exception to me helping you promote your work is if I find your work offensive, in which case I will only post the review and call it a day.

WHAT KATHRYN FINDS OFFENSIVE:

Not very much, frankly. I don’t like reading about rape, but if it is a part of your story and is handled in a mature and thoughtful way, I won’t be insulted or offended. If your book handles issues of gender, race, or sexuality carelessly, however, by presenting views that belittle others or make light of trauma or etc, it may hurt my sensitive little soul, causing me to weep.

Don’t make me weep.

SUMMARY OF REVIEW POLICY:

1. Send me an email at kathrynmhogan at gmail dot com asking me to review your book.

2. Don’t make me weep.

It’s just that simple!

PS: I never receive any compensation for my reviews. All of my reviews are honest, witty, and usually have one grammatical error.

    Kathryn,

I’m sorry to hear about you post-concussive syndrome. I wish all the best, and a rapid recovery. Perhaps we can connect when you recuperate, as I’m sure you will.

    Regards, Al Simmons
